Our community and surrounding areas of North and South Carolina have been utterly devastated by the floods caused by recent hurricane Florence. Families, individuals, and businesses, alike have been affected by the devastation. Enter social media…

Social media has become part of the fabric of our lives. Ninety-seven percent of all people 18-84 visited a social media site at some point yesterday. That is a staggering and consistent audience. Businesses post regularly on social media in order to keep their brands in front of and communicate regularly with customers and potential customers. But, in the wake of a natural disaster or tragedy, what is the best way for a business to use their social media platforms? Here are some best practices to keep in mind:

People find it disingenuous when businesses use social media to find favor for their brand during times of disaster. Therefore, be genuine in your posts. Show your concern by using a simple phrase of heartfelt support and maybe a hashtag from community organizations offering help.

Do not use social media to sell your products or services during a disaster, unless your products or services can directly help with rebuilding or community efforts. For example, if you have a business that offers disaster clean up or remediation, by all means, let the public know. You might even be in a position to offer insight into the situation from first-hand experience. But, it’s not the time to sell unrelated products or services.

Share stories that offer hope and inspiration to the community. Maybe highlight a local hero or project, and use your social media leverage as a business to bring people together for the cause. While social media can bring out the worst in people, it can also be used as a platform to showcase the best in humanity. It can be used to bring people together and to find comfort in the most dire situations.

Share important information, reports, or things people may find helpful during a disaster. This is a time to give what you have and what you can for others, and your business expertise may be helpful in some situations.

In the last two weeks, as our community braces for flood waters to peak and deals with the aftermath of receding flooding, one thing is for sure… we have all seen first hand how our community along the Grand Strand and our neighbors in North Carolina can come together to help each other. Countless stories of heroism, giving, and selfless efforts are inspiring. Even through the worst devastation, we see the best in those around us. We’re #CarolinaStrong.

The great thing about hiring a knowledgeable and cutting edge SEO company, is they keep ahead of the trends in search so you don’t have to! Voice search is now up 35% since 2008, and it’s because mobile phones have literally taken over local search. SEO Expert and owner of eNation Worldwide, Jacquie Gonzalez, has a few solid tips for optimizing your website for Voice Search. Jacquie explains, “When optimizing for voice search, believe it or not, you need to create content on a 9th grade level. Most people speak at a ninth grade level or below, and that is translating into search results.” Here are a few tips for voice search optimization of your website in 2018:

Get conversational! Think about the questions that people might ask Google about your business or your business industry. Then, answer those questions in your website content either via individual blog articles, FAQ’s, or on service or product pages. Remember, Google delivers matches to what people are searching for, so if you ask and answer questions, you will likely reach those searching via voice.

Maintain a Local Presence! Claim your business on Google My Business, make sure you are listed in local directories and industry-related directories with organic content. Answer questions on professional and industry forums and link back to your website in your answers.

Keep it simple! Keep content simple, easy-to-read, and bulleted in areas

Make sure your site is secure with an SSL certificate. Not only will more people want to click on your website when they see the https:// and padlock in front of your URL, but it is now also a ranking factor in Google.

Create a great UX! What is UX? It’s a term we use in the digital industry, and it stands for “User Experience.” Keep your content mobile friendly, responsive, and working fast! Page loading speed can kill a search query. Your site has to be fast with good clean code and optimized images to get customers from search engines these days!

If you would rather do what you do best and leave the SEO to the experts, give eNation Worldwide a call! Getting your business found in your locale is what they do best. If SEO is in your plans, put it in eNation’s hands!

Wondering why your rankings have plummeted in recent weeks or months? Google has been particularly active in making algorithm changes that WILL affect your site rankings. Since local SEO (Search Engine Optimization) became an integral part of local business traffic, SEO expert and owner of eNation Worldwide, Jacquie Gonzalez, has been following Google’s fluctuations, algorithm changes, and how they affect local businesses. Jacquie explains, “Content is key. Content on mobile devices is key, now more so than ever before.”

Recently, search on mobile devices overtook desktop search by a landslide. “It’s been a long-time coming, and we’ve finally seen it happen. If you still have a website that lacks good, readable content, if you aren’t active on social media, and if you think you can do what you’ve always done, you will get left in the dust by local competitors. It’s inevitable. You have to stay AHEAD of the curve, not just flow with it,” Jacquie notes. “It’s a lot like running a marathon… nothing is instant gratification with Google and search in general. You have to constantly work, constantly show consistency in social relevance, continuously update and refresh content and rich media within your website.”

What are some of the changes that Google has announced recently? “Just this past week, on April 17, Google lauched the Project Owl Update, where ranking signals will further give authority to quality content pages and demote low-quality content. In addition, back in November of 2016, Google launched an update that further demotes sites with low-quality content on mobile devices, so it’s not just good enough anymore to have a functional mobile site with no content– you need responsive design.”

Top Ways to Improve Website Rankings in 2017

Be an authority in your field, and let your website serve as an educational tool for what you do, by adding blogs, rich media, such as relevant videos, and good quality content that actually answers questions one might type into a search.

Be active in social media. Social relevance plays a huge part in Google rankings. Think about it. Google wants to deliver the results to the public that are going to be the most relevant, otherwise, people wouldn’t use it. If Google picks up that your site is fresh, readable, relevant, and popular, your rankings will reflect that as well.

A stagnant website means stagnant rankings. There is no such thing as “set it and forget it” when it comes to website ranking anymore. Back in the day, you could add a few good meta-keywords and expect to show up in search. Those days are long gone, and Google makes it very difficult for business owners with websites to cheat the system. It takes continuous effort month after month indefinitely to see improved rankings and continued success.

Continuously look to add good, quality inbound links. Popularity by association still goes a long way with Google. But, quality is king over quantity.

Be present in search directories, and increase online reviews. The companies with the most online reviews will usually show up higher in maps listings. However, be consistent in gaining new online reviews, or Google might see your efforts as fake or spammy.

According to Jacquie Gonzalez, “there are over 39 different ranking factors that Google (and other search engines) considers to be important. In addition, Google is constantly tweaking algorithms, so adjusting to natural fluctuations can take its toll on your business traffic. It’s a lot like the stock market. There are natural ups and downs, but you can make the ups and downs a little softer by consistently doing the right things.” eNation Worldwide is a full service interactive media company located in Myrtle Beach, specializing in SEO, Web Design, Social Media, and Inbound Marketing. Although based in Myrtle Beach, eNation serves businesses all over the country and in Canada. “Helping small to mid-sized, local businesses has always been my passion. Navigating the digital environment can be extremely overwhelming, and we enjoy helping business owners see success in that capacity, while letting them focus on what they do best. In ten years of having our thumbs on the pulse of Google, we can almost predict what they will do next. It’s all about staying ahead of the curve.”

Social Media and My Google Ranking

2010 was the year when social media really started to make waves for small to mid-sized local businesses. Facebook and YouTube became the most popular social media sites with dozens of others to follow suit. Suddenly business owners were having to learn an entirely new paradigm in marketing their businesses. In 2016, social relevance is one of Google’s major ranking factors, and business owners have now had to allocate marketing budgets for social media marketers and SEO specialists.

How and Why Does Social Media Affect My Google Ranking?

Let’s start the the how… Google algorithms are set up to pick up social signals. Each time a business posts to their social media sites with those sites being linked to their websites, organic, inbound links are being created. As people share, like, and interact with social posts, those signals send a message to Google that this must be a popular site with an active web presence.

The why is pretty simple… Google wants to deliver the results to the public that are the most relevant, and sites with social signals are seen as relevant. It’s a way to put all businesses on the same playing field. Business owners literally have to earn their rankings now by creating fresh, relevant content over time. In the past, shady business owners could rely on black hat tactics to buy their way to the top of the rankings. In addition, social media sites have become surrogate search engines. Consumers will look on facebook to see if you have a legitimate business profile.

Google search accounts for approximately 65% of the total searches on the web. The other 35% are comprised of the other major search engines– Yahoo, Bing, AOL, as well as social media sites and directories. So what exactly does Google consider factors when ranking sites higher than others? According to Jacquie Gonzalez, expert SEO specialist with interactive media company, eNation Worldwide, “There are over 39 different on-page and off-page factors that Google considers to be ranking factors.” So, when business owners ask themselves, “How Can I Rank Higher on Google,” here are a few of the major ranking factors:

On Page Content
It’s vitally important when trying to create and maintain authority on the web, that site owners continuously add fresh, keyword-targeted content to their websites. This can be done by adding pages or articles to your website via a blog or by creating content silos on your website. Google wants to see that each page has a target keyword or key phrase, and that the content is compelling, readable, and relevant.

Site Architecture and HTML
The architecture and code of the site is important. Search engines must be able to easily crawl a site. Sites need to be mobile-friendly or responsive for all devices. Page load time needs to be optimized, and clean code needs to be used at all times.

History of Domain
Trust is an important ranking factor for Google. When a site has a long history of having a domain with web content published on the web, Google considers that to be a positive ranking factor. As Google is looking to deliver the most relevant, trusted results to those searching on the web, it stands to reason, that websites with long-standing and good-standing history would have a better chance of higher rankings.

Social Relevance
Social Media changed the way we market our businesses. Facebook, the most popular social media site, is now one of the most popular search engines as well. It used to be that people checked a business’ reputation and authority if they had a website on the web. Now, in addition to having a website, a business must also be socially relevant. By being an active participant in social media, and having those social sites and content linked to your website, Google’s algorithms can rank your social signals. Google tends to give more authority to businesses with higher levels of social relevance. It’s a way of weeding out some of the old, un-updated sites from the rankings and making sure that the sites creating new, fresh content are getting seen.

Quality Inbound Links
Inbound linking is basically popularity by association. One of Google’s oldest algorithms, PageRank, is a score that determines the quality of a website’s inbound link profile. Are other more popular websites with higher Google PageRank linking to yours? Inbound linking is a relationship-building process that is best done over time. It’s reaching out to associations, affiliations, vendors, and owners of popular websites that have some sort of relationship with your business, and reciprocating links. Often times, a site will have thousands of links, but the quality of those links might not be of high quality or Google PR, and therefore, can actually damage a site’s reputation, as Google algorithms may see these links as spammy or toxic. When it comes to inbound links, quality always trumps quantity.

In a nutshell, there is no magic bullet to getting great search engine rankings. It’s a matter of doing all the right things consistently over time. This means that one must have the thumb on the pulse of Google and the search landscape to know what factors are most important. The importance and weight of certain ranking factors do change from time to time. But, the major factors haven’t changed. Adding fresh content, sharing on social media, creating good quality inbound linking relationships, keeping your site architecture and code clean, having content that is responsive for all devices… these are some of the major ways that you can improve your Google rankings over time. When trying to be #1 on a Google search, a business owner must ask themselves, “If I were Google, would I consider my website the most relevant resource on the web for this particular search?” In most cases, any site owner would honestly have to answer that question with a “no.” Just as there is no such thing as perfection, there will always be more one can do to get to #1 on Google and more importantly, stay there.

Two thousand new apps are added to the market place everyday.” Wow. There are some businesses out there who are still contemplating getting a much-needed mobile website, let alone a mobile app! Many business owners ask me how they can benefit from having a mobile app. Well, the benfits are two-fold– not only are they beneficial to you as a business owner, but they can also be benficial to your customers, thus creating a win-win situation!

Here are some of the benefits to your business of having your very own mobile application:

1. You can regularly keep in touch with your customers through unlimited push notifications. Yes, you can send your customers messages, specials, event notices, product changes or price changes, and so much more through the app.

2. You cultivate an atmosphere of customer loyalty and repeat business. Think about it… If you sell products or services, and your customers can access those products or services (or information about them) right from their phones without having to go anywhere else to find you, your customers are keeping you at the top of the mind…voluntarily!

3. You can make the flow of business easier with cool standard features such as food ordering, appointment setting, and mobile purchashing.

4. You can gather important information for contacting your clients in the future, such as email and mobile number.

5. With a mobile app for your business, you are able to build relationships, build customer loyalty, give your customers continuous brand access, enhance your social networking strategies, and increase sell-through.

Here are some benefits to your customers:

1. Instant touch to dial or GPS location features to find your bsuiness quickly and easily

2. Access to loyal customer discounts that other people are not privy to…

3. Convenience factors of being able to access your products/services right from their favorite possessions…their phones!

There are many benefits to having a mobile app created for your business. Almost every business category can benefit from the features that can be customized for a mobile app. The hardest part about getting an app is the decision to get one. Many local businesses are trying to make sense of advertising and marketing budgets in a crazy economy. The questions you have to ask yourself are… Are you poised for the future? Are you poised for the present? Mobile is now, and with over 88% of consumers accessing your business through mobile searches, can you afford not to be where your customers are at this very moment?

If a company guarantees immediate or specific results, run as fast you can! Organic SEO requires a multitude of best practices being put into motion consistently over time. There is no magic bullet to gaining top search rankings on Google and other search engines. I liken SEO to “spokes on a wheel.” You can have a working wheel with just enough spokes to hold it up, but the more “spokes,” or best SEO practices, in motion, the stronger your wheel will be for the long haul.

First and foremost, as an SEO in Myrtle Beach myself, I have been working on organic search engine optimization for local businesses for several years. The main areas that you can work on to improve the search engine rankings of your site are 1) On-Page areas of your site where search engines crawl, suc as title tags, alt image attributes, link text, and header content, 2) the creation of organic, inbound links over time by building relationships with businesses which are more web-popular than yours and by using other tools such as blogging, 3) improving your social media voice, 4) getting listed in local and other directories such as Google Places and DMOZ, 5) Creating keyword-rich content that your readers will really want to read, and finally 6) using long tail keywords in your content and domain.

When you combine efforts in all of these areas, you are most likely going to have a very successful rise to the top of your local search engines. Ofcourse, if you are not sure what any of this means, you might want to call a professional…maybe one who does this joyfully for a living… more specifically, Jacquie Gonzalez, your local and profesional Myrtle Beach SEO specialist with eNation Worldwide. Together, we can watch your rankings soar and your business garner more market share with every passing day.

So, when SEO is in your plans, put it eNation’s hands!
